When I was 11 or 12, back when Men at Work was an internationally popular band, I may have believed I'd see Colin Hay perform in 2009, but not under these circumstances. I recall that group playing huge venues, but the performance I attended last night was pretty cozy, just downtown in Iowa City. A friend from work suggested we go, and I got around to buying a couple tickets just this past Monday. The venue wasn't even sold out, and I'm guessing most people there bought a ticket to hear the hits.
To my pleasant surprise, it was a great show. Not that I thought Colin Hay is washed up; I sort of figured he'd be milking the nostalgia circuit. I was familiar with Hay being featured on the Garden State soundtrack, and he appeared on Scrubs, but he's also been putting out records somewhat consistently. During the show, Hay freely tuned his guitars, which he seemed to swap out after every song. He played the MaW hits, to be sure... "I've got about five hits, which is not as good as ten, but better than one.". He also covered a batch of new stuff. He wound up the evening with "Down Under" and "Be Good Johnny", both re-worked with his current band, and hell, they were great. He should put out a live album.
